And the Oscar goes to …

the first foreign film to win an Oscar for Best Picture, Parasite!

Also, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Film Feature. On Sunday, the filmmaker, Bong Joon-Ho tied movie mogul Walt Disney’s record for the most Oscars in one night: four.

During his acceptance speech for Best Director, Mr. Joon-Ho praised the other nominees. Humbly, he admitted that he thoroughly studied Martin Scorsese’s films in film school. He also praised Quentin Tarantino, another runner-up, for advertising his previous films, even when no one else did.

Vanquishing your role models is rare, however sincerely praising your competitors is wise. In Anne Cooper Ready’s book, Off The Cuff: What to Say at a Moment’s Notice, she describes this very act in Chapter 17 on Acceptance Speeches & Awards.

“When you are competing for an award, take your lead from sports where players and teams genuinely compliment their opponents. This is a win-win situation, particularly for you. If you lose, you said yourself that they were really good. If you win, you appear to be that much better.”(Ready,Off The Cuff,136).

To win with grace is a noble act, and to be genuinely personal when you do it touches the hearts of many. Exemplified in his speech and films, Mr Joon-Ho shared the most memorable lesson that he’s learned for film. “The most personal is the most creative.” Ms. Ready agrees in her chapter Toasts & Roasts (Ready,Off The Cuff,125). “The more appropriately personal you can make it, the more memorable it will be.”

Off the Cuff…

Impromptu speaking is the subject of Anne Cooper Ready’s latest book from Career Press, Off the Cuff/What to Say at a Moment’s Notice. An estimated 99 percent of what we say is impromptu, which is defined as without preparation or advance thought.

In paperback, this book helps you learn both basic and advanced skills in solving communication challenges that range from apologies and meetings to toasts and roasts to introductions and eulogies.
