The Press as a Sounding Board

Under pressure from an abusive tweet firestorm by Donald Trump: “a horrible and very unfair situation … cannot allow this miscarriage of justice!” The president objected to a stiff sentence for his one-time political consultant Roger Stone recommended by the four prosecutors in the case, all of whom have subsequently quit. The Attorney General went to the press.

AG William Barr said in a press interview with ABC News Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas. “To have public statements and tweets made about the department. About our people in the department, our men and women here. About cases pending in the department. And about judges before whom we have cases make it impossible for me to do my job. And to assure the courts and the prosecutors in the department that we’re doing our work with integrity.”

Responding to Mr. Barr’s ABC  interview, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said, “the White House wasn’t bothered by the comments at all. The President believes he has the right, just like any American citizen, to publicly offer his opinions.”

But, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., appeared on Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier. “Attorney General William Barr believes the president’s tweeting is getting in the way of his (Barr’s) work. Mr. Trump should follow the attorney general’s cue.

“The president made a great choice when he picked Bill Barr to be the attorney general.”  Mr. McConnell told Fox News. “I think the president should listen to the advice.”
