Nostalgia Scored in Super Bowl 2020

Nostalgia for the Old West scored for Frito Lay at the Super Bowl 2020. Lil Nas X met his match in a fast draw dance-off with actor Sam Elliott to the theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. And they handed it off to Billy Ray Cyrus in a cameo.

According to Marketing Dive, “this is the first time Frito Lay zeroed in on the Cool Ranch Doritos brand in a Super Bowl ad. The teaser video starred actor Sam Elliott as a cowboy walking into a bar reciting the lyrics to ‘Old Town Road’. Lil Nas X’s hit song.”

Using the Super Bowl as the line of scrimmage, the new, improved and more flavorful Cool Ranch chip was introduced to a broad audience. They tied it into Lil Nas X’s hit song which was Billboard’s longest-running No. 1 last year.

Google

To recap for those of us who were refilling the chip bowl. This commercial began with an old man typing into Google “how to not forget.” Then asking his Google assistant device to show him photos of his late wife, Loretta. The man continues to ask Google to remember certain things about her. She hated his mustache, loved going to Alaska, and always snorted when she laughed. At the finish line, Google recites all of the things the man had asked the device to remember. The touchdown was the man saying, “Remember that I’m the luckiest man in the world.”

Turns out, the nostalgic ad was actually based on the real-life story of a Google employee’s 85-year-old grandfather, according to Chief Marketing Officer Lorraine Twohill. What’s more, the employee’s grandfather, who inspired the ad, did the voiceover.

Jeep

Jeep’s February 2nd “Groundhog Day” commercial received the highest rating for ads aired during Super Bowl LIV, according to USA Today’s Ad Meter results.

The ad, featured actor Bill Murray’s replay of his classic 1993 movie, “Groundhog Day.” Instead of driving a Chevrolet pickup truck as he did in the movie, Mr. Murray is rescued by a Jeep Gladiator.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CMO, Olivier Francois told USA TODAY Sports in a pre-game interview that it was all worth it because of Mr. Murray, whom he believes is a perfect “gladiator.”

“There’s just this sense of freedom in all he pursues,” Mr. Francois said. “He will do things on his own terms. He is not going to do a commercial. Or even a movie, if it is not what he deeply feels like doing. He’s adventurous. He’s original.”
