QUESTIONS TO ASK

in selecting a media coaching firm:

Will your interviewer/coach be a specialist in my/my client's field?
To be realistic and effective, your interviewer/coach needs knowledge of your world.

What clients have you had in my/my client's industry?
This is very important. For perspective, you need a media coach who is not only familiar with your company or client, but also the industry.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE MEDIA COACHING BUSINESS?
Experience counts in coaching. A company that has been in business for 5 years hasn’t had as much practice with as many different clients and spokespeople as the company that has specialized in media coaching for over 25 years.
WILL YOU INCLUDE BOTH A QUESTIONER AND A COACH? WHAT MEDIA BACKGROUNDS DO THEY HAVE?
Journalist coaches should have had ample experience with both print and broadcast media.
What experience do my interviewer and coach have?
Journalistic experience should include print, network news, local news, talk shows, radio, business press, satellite.
DO YOU HAVE A STUDIO?
When a session is conducted in a studio or on location, there are fewer interruptions and distractions.
Will I receive a follow-up e-mail with revised messages in sound bites?
It's very important to have a written record of your revised messages after the session as follow-up.
WHAT DO I GET FOR THE PRICE? In addition to experience, what does the session/sessions include?
On Location: Is the location provided? Is a camera person included with camera and sound for playback and critique? A take-home DVD of the interviews? A workbook? A follow-up e-mail of revised messages in sound bites?
At your studio:
Is lunch included? Parking? A take-home DVD of the interviews? A workbook? A follow-up e-mail of revised messages in sound bites?

WHAT IF MY CLIENT NEEDS ADDITIONAL SERVICES?
A full-service communications firm offers speech writing and presentation coaching, quarterly report scripting and executive practice, business etiquette, international protocol, bi-lingual coaching and accent reduction.
WHY SHOULDN’T I DO THE MEDIA COACHING MYSELF?
To avoid criticizing your boss or your clients. To test your/their messages and hone their sound bites. To keep your relationship with your boss or your clients and media contacts intact!
