Finding Workarounds that Work

Workarounds that Work. Past READY FOR MEDIA client and author Russell Bishop’s recent book explains that a “workaround” is working around something or someone to deal successfully with a problem that prevents you from achieving your aim.

With a disarmed Congress, corporate America is taking aim at the NRA. Now, that’s customer service!

Workarounds

Dick’s Sporting Goods, founded in 1948 by Richard “Dick” Stack, has expanded to become one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world. It has gone on record that it will no longer sell assault-style rifles or high-capacity magazines and will not sell guns to anyone under 21 after the shooting massacre at a Parkland, Florida high school left 17 teenagers, coaches and teachers dead. Not to mention Sandy Hook or Columbine.

Walmart, the largest retailer in the U.S., which has not sold assault rifles since 2015 has announced it will stop selling firearms and ammunition to anyone under 21 and will stop the sale of items “resembling assault-style rifles,” such as airsoft guns and toys.

Kroger, the largest grocery chain in the U.S., will also stop selling firearms and ammunition entirely and will remove publications that glamorize assault weapons such as Guns & Ammo, Tactical Life and Recoil.

Citigroup, the world’s largest issuer of credit cards, condemned gun violence and slammed lawmakers for failing to pass gun control measures. In the aftermath of the deadly shootings in Florida, Citibank will require retail clients to only sell guns to individuals who have passed a background check and to not sell bump stocks or high-capacity magazines.

Good public relations? Yes. Good branding? Yes. And these workarounds are working for this generation of customers and the next.

Keep up the good work!
